Podiatry is the branch of medicine devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, disorders and injuries of the foot, ankle, and lower leg. Podiatrists, also known as doctors of podiatric medicine (DPMs), and treat ankle and foot injuries, deformities and infections including calluses, corns, ingrown toenails, heel spurs, bunions, arch problems, diabetes foot care and heel pain.
Podiatrists use several techniques to evaluate and treat these problems including physical therapy and prescribing drugs, ordering x-rays, analyzing patients’ walk and weight distribution, performing podiatric surgery, fitting corrective shoe inserts called orthotics, designing custom-made shoes, and setting fractures.
